Idlewild mission group spreads gospel, medicine in Haiti
on November 12 2008

LUTZ – There’s a story in the Bible in which Jesus feeds 5,000 people by giving thanks for five loaves of bread and two fish, turning the food into enough for everyone. After the group eats, there are 12 baskets full of broken pieces of bread left over.
Allen Pelham, of Idlewild Baptist Church, and 17 other church members lived their own version of this story, which is referred to by many as “the feeding of the 5,000,” during a recent mission trip they took to Haiti. When they arrived in Haiti, the group bought 3,300 pounds of beans and 900 pounds of rice to give out to Haitians, and they divided some of the food into smaller packs that would hold a week’s worth of food for two people. But carrying around bags of food for distribution in Haiti would have been dangerous, said Pelham, of Lutz. Photos submitted. Staff slideshow by Keith Carson.
